The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public research university in the Westwood district of Los Angeles, United States.
The university is organized into six undergraduate colleges, seven professional schools, and four professional health science schools. It became the Southern Branch of the University of California in 1919, making it the second-oldest undergraduate campus of the ten-campus University of California system. Fourteen Nobel laureates, three Fields Medalists, two Chief Scientists of the U.S. Air Force and three Turing Award winners have been faculty, researchers, or alumni. Among the current faculty members, 55 have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, 28 to the National Academy of Engineering, 39 to the Institute of Medicine, and 124 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
